A man from Lawnside, Tyrone Garrett, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting three children that were in his care in 2010.
After 12 hours of jury deliberations, Garrett was found guilty of first degree aggravated sexual assault, two counts of second degree sexual assault, and three counts of second degree endangering the welfare of a child. The victims, who have a familial connection with Garrett, were between the ages of 6 and 8 at the time the assaults took place. Evidence, including testimony from the victims, presented by the prosecution showed that the victims had been assaulted 5 – 10 times each while their parents were at work.
At his sentencing, Garrett could receive 70 years in New Jersey State Prison if given consecutive terms. This means that he would serve the prison sentence for each crime he was convicted of one after another rather than at the same time. Further, sexual assault crimes are included under the “No Early Release Act” meaning 85 percent of the sentence must be served before parole eligibility.
