A woman from Beverly has been arrested and charged with shoplifting.
According to police, Stephany Santos-Rivera, allegedly attempted to steal over $140 worth of merchandise from a Kohls’ department store in Westampton before she was caught by one of the store’s loss prevention agents. She was served with a complaint summons and released pending a court appearance.
To be charged with shoplifting, a person does not necessarily even have to leave the store with the merchandise, as was the case here. It is enough that you conceal the merchandise with the intent to deprive the merchant of it. Shoplifting can range from a disorderly persons offense to a second degree felony depending on the value of the property stolen. Rivera will be facing a disorderly person offense which can result in 6 months in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
