A 34 year old man from Williamstown was shot once in the chest earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Coles MIll Road outside of a house a little before 10 p.m. According to police, two people were seen fleeing the scene but no descriptions have been given as of today. The victim is currently still alive and is being treated at Cooper University Hospital. The major crimes unit from the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and Monroe Township Police Department are investigating.
If the suspects are arrested by police, they could be charged with attempted murder depending on the circumstances. Attempted murder can be either a first or second degree crime in New Jersey depending on whether the person acted with premeditation. If the alleged shooter in this case acted with premeditation, he will be charged in the first degree. First degree crimes carry a prison sentence of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey. However, a conviction for attempted murder in the first degree can result in a life sentence. Further, if the victim ends up dying, the charges could be upgraded to murder.
