Merchantville NJ police are searching for a man suspected of robbing a bank on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at a Bank of America in Merchantville when a man entered the bank around 10 a.m. He proceeded to approach the bank teller and allegedly handed her a note demanding money. The teller complied with this request and, after receiving the money, the man got away in a car. Additionally, pictures of the suspect and his vehicle have been released by police. Police have asked that anyone with potential information on this suspect contact them immediately.
In New Jersey, robbery can be either a first or second degree crime. In this case, the suspect will be charged in the first degree if it is revealed that he threatened to kill or seriously injure the teller or if he was armed with or threatened to use a deadly weapon. A conviction for second degree robbery can result in five to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison with a presumption of incarceration. Further, this crime is included under the No Early Release Act (NERA), meaning that 85 percent of the sentence must be served before the prisoner is eligible for parole.
