A Camden NJ resident was arrested after allegedly providing deadly heroin to a Woolwich NJ man.
Woolwich police officers were called to a local residence after receiving a report of an unresponsive man. When officers got to the house, they found the 42-year-old victim in bad shape.
The victim was transported to nearby Inspira Medical Center Woodbury, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators looked into the death and determined that it was caused by an acute heroin overdose. Investigators also figured out that the source of the heroin was in Camden, New Jersey.
The Woolwich Township Police Department then began working with the Camden County Police Department to identify the person who sold the deadly drugs to the victim. Investigators eventually determined that the 22-year-old suspect was responsible for giving the heroin to the victim.
Police officers placed the suspect under arrest and charged him with strict liability drug-induced death. The suspect could also face charges for heroin distribution.
If the suspect is convicted of causing the death of the victim, he might be subject to significant penalties. The statute addressing drug-induced deaths is modeled on the NJ felony murder rule. A conviction on this charge carries a potential sentence of 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was taken to the Camden County Jail. He is being held at the facility in lieu of a $500,000 bail amount.
