Camden NJ police arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a local man.
The killing represents the first murder in Camden during 2015. According to police, the 27-year-old victim was fatally gunned down while walking on the 1300 block of Thurman Street near Pershing Street in Camden, New Jersey.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the suspect confronted the victim prior to the shooting and warned him to stay out of the area.
The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the back and a graze to the hip in the attack.
Emergency responders transported the victim to nearby Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Camden NJ police investigated the shooting and reportedly recovered three .45-caliber shell casings at the scene. The casings were found outside a residence located on Thurman Street.
Police also got access to surveillance video footage which allegedly shows the suspect and the victim together just before the killing.
Additionally, prosecutors said that a witness who is familiar with both the suspect and the victim positively identified the suspect as the killer.
Just 48 hours after the shooting, Camden police had the suspect in custody. The 29-year-old suspect has been formally charged with murder for the fatal shooting.
The suspect was recently arraigned in Camden County Superior Court. The superior court judge ordered that the suspect continue to be held on a $1 million bail amount. As a result, the suspect remains housed at the Camden County Jail.
Prosecutors in the case have noted that the suspect has a checkered criminal record. According to court records, the suspect was previously arrested on drug charges and weapons offenses.
At the time of the latest incident, the suspect was out on bail for weapons charges stemming from the death of his brother. According to prosecutors, the suspect brought a firearm to the scene of the investigation into his brother’s killing in Gloucester City, New Jersey.
The suspect’s defense attorney attempted to downplay the suspect’s prior criminal record. The defense attorney also disputed the veracity of the video evidence which allegedly shows the suspect at the scene of the Camden shooting.
