Camden County police are trying to identify a man who allegedly impersonated a police officer in Camden, New Jersey.
According to authorities, the suspect walked into the New York Mini Market located at 1301 Kaighns Avenue in Camden, NJ. Once inside the store, the suspect allegedly approached a store employee and lifted his shirt to reveal an undershirt. The undershirt reportedly had the label “police” on the front.
The suspect also allegedly revealed a handgun in his waistband.
The store clerk later told police that the suspect asked to purchase a ski mask. While making the request, the suspect told the clerk that he was an undercover police officer.
Witnesses provided police with a description of the suspect. The suspect is described as a black male. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a Chicago Bears football jersey with the name “SAYERS” written on the back.
Police also revealed that the suspect is believed to frequent the area near Thurman Street and Newport Street in Camden.
The Camden County Police Department is actively investigating the incident.
If the suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, he would be subject to significant criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:28-8, anyone who falsely pretends to hold a position as a law enforcement officer can be charged with a fourth degree felony. A conviction on fourth degree impersonating a police officer charges can result in a sentence of up to 18 months in NJ State Prison.
