Camden New Jersey police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman on a city street.
According to law enforcement reports, the shooting occurred sometime around 10:30pm. The victim was found lying on the 100 block of Van Buren Street. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and leg.
The victim was quickly transported by medics to Cooper University Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital were unable to save her; she was pronounced dead a short time later. The bullet wounds were confirmed as the cause of death.
Police later identified the victim as a 20-year-old female.
Camden NJ police are currently investigating the shooting. At this time, police have not made any arrests in the case. Additionally, investigators have yet to identify a motive for the killing.
If a suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, they would be subject to severe criminal penalties. That’s because murder is the most serious criminal offense in the New Jersey Criminal Code.
As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, criminal homicide is a first degree felony when the offender purposely or knowingly causes the death of another person. A conviction on first degree murder charges can result in life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years in NJ State Prison.
