Cherry Hill NJ police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one person seriously injured.
According to law enforcement, the shooting occurred at the Inn of the Dove hotel, which is located on Cuthbert Boulevard in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Local law enforcement received a report of gunshots at the hotel around 3 a.m. When police officers arrived at the scene, they saw a blood-stained shirt in the parking lot. However, the victim had already left the scene.
Police later learned that the victim had been transported to Cooper University Hospital before authorities got to the scene. The victim received medical treatment for a gunshot wound. He remains in critical condition.
Additionally, according to police scanner reports, a female victim was assaulted at the scene of the shooting. It is believed that the assault took place while the victim was inside a car in the hotel parking lot.
The Cherry Hill Police Department is actively investigating the shooting. Investigators believe that the shooting might have stemmed from a fight that broke out in one of the hotel rooms.
At this time, police have not commented on whether they have identified any suspects in the shooting or the assault.
If police are eventually able to identify and apprehend a suspect, it is likely that significant criminal charges would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who causes bodily injury with a deadly weapon such as a handgun can face second degree aggravated assault charge. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
