A Camden New Jersey woman recently pleaded guilty to federal weapons charges.
The 25-year-old suspect appeared in U.S. District Court in Camden NJ and reportedly admitted that she purchased five guns in North Carolina with full knowledge that they would be sold illegally in New Jersey at a later date. She officially pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to deal firearms without a license.
According to federal prosecutors, the deal to buy the guns also involved the suspect’s 41-year-old cousin. The cousin, whose case is still pending, is also from Camden, New Jersey.
Prosecutors alleged that the suspect and her cousin traveled from Camden NJ to Fayetteville, North Carolina in December 2011. The purpose of their trip was so that the suspect could officially apply for gun permits in North Carolina. The suspect’s cousin reportedly provided her with the cash needed to pay for the permit applications.
It is believed by authorities that the suspect’s cousin enlisted the suspect because he is a felon who is prohibited from legally purchasing or possessing firearms.
Once the suspect’s gun permit applications were successfully processed, she allegedly returned to North Carolina to buy five handguns at two gun shops. She then allegedly transported the guns across state lines and into New Jersey, where she gave the firearms to her cousin for a fee of $200 per weapon.
Now that the suspect has pleaded guilty to the weapons offenses, she faces significant penalties. She will have to return to U.S. District Court in Camden NJ in September for a sentencing hearing, at which point she could be sentenced to up to 5 years in federal prison and fined as much as $250,000.
