The shooting reportedly occurred on the 1200 block of North 26th Street in Camden, New Jersey. The Camden County Police Department received a call about the shooting sometime around 2:00 a.m.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they entered a residence and found a man who had been shot in the neck.
Prior to entering the home, police officers were turned away by a woman who answered the door. The woman reportedly screamed at the police officers and then slammed the door shut on them.
The barricade ended a short time later when police were allowed inside. That’s when they saw the 41-year-old shooting victim. He was reportedly lying inside a bedroom on the second floor of the home.
The victim was rushed to nearby Cooper University Hospital, where he received medical treatment for serious neck injuries. Afterwards, the victim was listed in critical but stable condition.
The Camden County Police Department is actively investigating the incident and trying to determine the circumstances of the shooting. During the course of the investigation, police have already questioned the woman who answered the door, as well as a teenage girl who was also inside the residence at the time.
Early reports indicate that police are considering the possibility that it was an accidental shooting.
If authorities determine that the shooting was intentional, it is possible that someone could face criminal charges for aggravated assault. Moreover, depending on the circumstances, the shooter could also be charged with weapons offenses such as unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
