A Sickerville man who worked as a corrections officer in Camden County NJ has been accused of illegally accessing drug case information.
According to law enforcement, the 39-year-old suspect used his position as a corrections officer to gain access to a secure database. Once the suspect accessed the Camden County police computer system, he searched for confidential case information.
The cases that the suspect looked up reportedly involved a Camden drug dealer with whom the suspect has ties. The drug dealer allegedly ran an open-air drug market on Pfeiffer Street in Camden, New Jersey. He was charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to distribute heroin in federal court in September.
Authorities conducted an in-depth investigation into the suspect and reportedly learned that he flew to Las Vegas with the drug dealer in June.
The suspect’s illegal actions on the county computer network reportedly occurred between August 26 and October 21.
The suspect now faces charges for second degree official misconduct.
A conviction on the official misconduct charges could result in serious jail time for the suspect. Additionally, a conviction would likely prevent the suspect from ever working for a public agency again.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was taken to a local jail. He was being held at the jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
The suspect has been suspended without pay from the Camden County Corrections Department while the criminal charges are pending.
