Camden County police are investigating a fatal nighttime shooting in Camden, New Jersey.
The homicide went down a short time after 7:00 p.m. The Camden County Police Department received reports of gunshots being fired in the area of 4th Street and Clinton Street in Camden, NJ. Additionally, police received a ShotSpotter activation alerting them to the shooting.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the 24-year-old victim lying on the pavement.
The victim was rushed to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the possible murder. At this time, law enforcement has not identified a suspect in the case.
If a suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, they would likely face significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in life imprisonment in NJ State Prison.
This killing is the 39th homicide to occur in Camden NJ so far this year. There were a total of just 45 homicides in Camden during the entirety of 2014.
