Camden County police are investigating a fatal shooting on a Camden NJ street.
According to law enforcement, a 24-year-old man was shot and killed while walking on the 700 block of South 8th Street in Camden, New Jersey. The shooting occurred around 4:00 p.m.
The shooting set off a gunfire detection system, which alerted police to the incident. Camden County police officers were then dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim lying unconscious in an alley.
The victim was transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival.
The Camden County Police Department is actively investigating the homicide. At this time, police have not identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case.
If investigators do eventually identify a suspect in the killing, it is likely that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree crime and carries the most severe penalties in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could lead to life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
