Camden New Jersey police are investigating a fatal shooting on a city street.
The tragic incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on the 1700 block of South 9th Street in Camden, NJ.
Camden County Metro Police got a report of a shooting when a “shot spotter” activation was set off near Branch Village in Camden NJ.
Camden police responded to the scene and came across a motor vehicle riddled with bullet holes. Police also found a number of shell casings at the scene. However, law enforcement did not come across any victims.
Police officers continued to investigate and canvassed the area. Eventually, police discovered the victim. According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The 29-year-old victim was rushed to nearby Cooper University Hospital, where doctors tried to save him. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead approximately one hour after the shooting.
Although the investigation remains active and ongoing, police have yet to identify a suspect in the case.
If investigators can eventually identify and locate a suspect, it is likely that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious criminal offense in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
