A Camden New Jersey man faces murder charges in the shooting death of his cousin.
The homicide occurred on August 23, 2015. According to Camden County authorities, the 26-year-old suspect shot and killed his 25-year-old cousin.
The Camden County Police Department received a call about gunshots fired in the area of Sycamore Street and Orchard Street in Camden, NJ. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound and lying in the roadway.
The victim was rushed to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Tragically, doctors could not save the victim; he was pronounced dead approximately one hour after the shooting.
Camden County detectives conducted an investigation and got information from the victim’s cellphone. Investigators also obtained video surveillance footage and GPS data. Police used the evidence to link the suspect to the homicide.
Police obtained an arrest warrant and searched for the suspect. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force later arrested the suspect at his lawyer’s office.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the first degree murder charges, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the NJ Criminal Code and carries a potential punishment of life imprisonment.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was remanded to the Camden County Jail. He was being held at the jail in lieu of a $1 million bail amount.
