Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man during the early morning hours in Camden, New Jersey.
According to law enforcement, a 44-year-old Camden NJ man was shot and killed on a Sunday morning. The homicide occurred while the man was walking on Pershing Street.
The Camden County Police Department received a report of gunshots fired on the 1400 block of Pershing Street around 3:12 a.m. Police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim lying on the sidewalk.
The victim was rushed by emergency responders to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors could not save the victim; he was pronounced dead roughly an hour after the shooting.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the Camden County Police Department are actively investigating the murder. At this time, authorities have not identified a suspect in the killing.
If police do eventually identify and capture a suspect, it is likely that criminal charges for first degree murder could follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction for first degree murder could result in life imprisonment in NJ State Prison, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
