Police in Camden New Jersey are investigating a late-night shooting that left one person with serious injuries.
According to authorities via news and emergency scanner reports, the shooting took place a short time before 1 a.m. on North 33rd Street in Camden, NJ.
One person, a 21-year-old man, sustained serious injuries as a result of the shooting. Police told news media outlets that the victim was shot once in the chest.
After the shooting, the victim was rushed to Cooper University Hospital to receive medical treatment for a gunshot wound to his chest. Officials have not yet released a statement on his condition.
The Camden Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office are currently collaborating on an investigation into the incident. At this time, investigators have not yet identified a suspect or a motive for the shooting.
If investigators are eventually able to identify and apprehend a suspect, serious criminal charges for aggravated assault would likely follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who causes bodily injury to another person while using a deadly weapon such as a handgun can be charged with a second degree felony. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could result in a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
