Camden police arrested four men yesterday during a traffic stop after they found a loaded handgun in the car.
The stop took place on 5th and Pine Street after the officer noticed the car had allegedly committed a traffic violation. A subsequent search of the car resulted in the officer reportedly finding a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 special handgun. He then proceeded to arrest the driver and all three passengers who were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon among other charges. They are all being held in the Camden County Jail on $50,000 bail.
Unlawful possession of a weapon penalties vary depending on the type of weapon in question. In this case, the suspects were allegedly found with a handgun. In New Jersey, unlawful possession of a handgun is a third degree crime which can result in a State Prison sentence of 3 to 5 years. At least two of the suspects had prior records as well so they will almost certainly be facing jail time if found guilty.
