Police in Camden New Jersey are investigating a shooting incident on a city street.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred at the intersection of Benson Street and Eutaw Avenue in Camden, NJ. The victim, a 21-year-old man, sustained serious injuries while walking on the street around 1:45 a.m.
The Camden County Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired in the area and quickly dispatched officers to the scene. Police found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The victim was rushed to nearby Cooper Hospital, where he received medical treatment for his injuries. The victim was later listed in critical condition.
Camden County police are actively investigating the shooting. At this time, police have not yet identified a suspect for the shooting.
If a suspect is eventually identified and captured, they would be subject to severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), aggravated assault is classified as a second degree felony if it involves the use of a deadly weapon such as a handgun or knife. A conviction on second degree aggravated assault charges could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
