The Camden Police are currently searching for and asking for help from the public in locating a sexual assault suspect.
The assault occurred on Friday early in the morning in an abandoned warehouse near the corner of 7th Street and Kaighn Avenue according to police. The suspect and the victim had been walking together for a while until the suspect pulled a knife on her and forced her into the warehouse. The suspect has been described as a bald, black male, 5 feet 5 inches tall, and 180 pounds.
If the suspect is found, he could be charged with aggravated sexual assault since he was armed with a knife that he threatened the victim with. A person convicted of aggravated sexual assault can be sentenced from 10 to 20 years in New Jersey since it is a crime of the first degree, the most serious in the criminal code. It is included under New Jersey’s “No Early Release Act” as well meaning 85 percent of the sentence must be served before parole eligibility. Further, a conviction for aggravated sexual assault subjects a person to “Megan’s Law” meaning he or she must register their addresses with the local police, in addition to providing updates as to any changes in their address, employment, or schooling.
