Evesham Township police recently arrested a Clementon NJ woman who allegedly assaulted a police officer.
According to law enforcement, the 25-year-old suspect attacked the police officer during an incident at a 7-Eleven in Evesham, New Jersey.
The suspect allegedly got into a dispute with a cab driver sometime around 10:30pm at the store, which is located on Route 70. A police officer was dispatched to the scene after someone alerted local police.
When the police officer got to the store, he began speaking with the suspect and the cab driver. However, the conversation came to an abrupt end when the suspect allegedly took a violent swing at the officer.
The officer placed the suspect under arrest and put her in handcuffs. According to authorities, this did not stop the suspect from repeatedly kicking the officer.
The suspect was later charged with third degree aggravated assault, as well as resisting arrest because of her alleged actions after being arrested.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the most serious assault charges, she would be subject to significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), aggravated assault on a police officer is a third degree felony. Anyone convicted of third degree aggravated assault of a police officer can potentially be sentenced to 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was released from police custody on her own recognizance. She will have to appear in Burlington County Superior Court at a later date to answer the charges against her.
