A man from Pennsauken has been charged in connection to a shooting of a Camden NJ man in July.
The suspect was arrested after allegedly shooting the victim, Nhat Tran, during a robbery attempt. The victim was found dead in his car at 34th and Rosedale Street. The suspect has allegedly admitted to police that his goal was just to rob Tran; however, he ended up shooting and killing him.
The suspect was charged with felony murder as a result of the incident. Felony murder occurs when the actor, acting either alone or with one or more other persons, is engaged in the commission of certain felonies when committing a murder. Felony murder is a first degree crime in New Jersey, and it can result in even more severe punishments than most other first degree crimes. If the defendant in this case is convicted, he may be sentenced to 30 years to life imprisonment. Further, this crime is included under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act (NERA), meaning the defendant must serve 85 percent of his or her prison sentence before parole eligibility.
