Camden County law enforcement is investigating the fatal shooting of a man on a street in Camden, New Jersey.
The homicide victim was a 24-year-old male from East Orange, NJ. He was reportedly walking near the 2800 block of North Constitution Road in Camden NJ around 9:20 p.m. on a Friday night when he was shot and killed.
According to authorities, the Camden County Police Department became aware of the violent incident when police received a report of gunshots from ShotSpotter, a gunfire detection system.
Camden County New Jersey police officers were subsequently dispatched to the scene of the shooting, where they encountered the victim lying in a nearby alley and suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where doctors valiantly tried to save his life. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead roughly 20 minutes after arriving at the medical facility.
Camden County police are currently investigating the homicide. At this time, law enforcement has yet to identify a suspect in the case.
If investigators can eventually determine the identity of the person who committed the homicide, it is likely that the culprit would face serious criminal charges for first degree murder. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, anyone convicted of murder in New Jersey can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
This killing represented the 18th homicide in Camden NJ so far this year. Last year, there were a total of 11 homicides in Camden, New Jersey.
