Police in Gloucester Township are investigating a hit-and-run accident that left the victim with several broken bones.
According to authorities, the 23-year-old victim was walking on Sicklerville Road, near the Strawberry Square Road shopping center, when he was hit by a car.
The victim suffered serious injuries, including more than six broken bones, as a result of the accident. The suspect was treated at a local hospital; he remains in critical but stable condition.
A surveillance camera from Joe Canal’s Liquor Store, located in the Strawberry Square Road shopping center, reportedly captured images of two vehicles leaving the parking lot around the time of the accident.
Police have labelled these cars as “vehicles of interest” which could be connected to the hit-and-run accident.
The first vehicle captured on the video is a light-colored Jeep Cherokee; the second vehicle is a light-colored four-door vehicle.
Police are looking for the drivers of these vehicles. Police are also actively investigating the hit-and-run accident.
If the driver of the vehicle which struck the victim is identified and apprehended, they could face significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 39:4-129, leaving the scene of an accident can be classified as a disorderly persons offense when the accident caused bodily injury to another person. A conviction on this charge may result in a sentence of up to 180 days in the local county jail.
Moreover, the suspect in this case could potentially be charged with assault by auto if it is determined that they recklessly caused the accident. Assault by auto is classified as a felony-level offense and is punishable by state prison time.
