Police in Camden New Jersey are investigating a shooting that left a teenager dead.
According to law enforcement, the fatal shooting occurred sometime after midnight. The victim was shot and killed while walking on the 1200 block of Mechanic Street, near Norris Street in Camden, NJ.
The Camden County Police Department received a report of multiple gunshots being fired in the area. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the 18-year-old victim injured and lying on the ground. The victim had suffered a gunshot wound to his back.
The victim was immediately transported to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Tragically, doctors were unable to save him; he died on the operating table.
Camden County police are actively investigating the homicide. At this time, police have not identified the shooter or a motive for the shooting.
If authorities are eventually able to identify and apprehend the suspect, serious criminal charges for murder could follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, first degree murder is the most serious criminal offense in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a sentence of 30 years to life in NJ State Prison.
The victim was a high school football star at Woodrow Wilson High School. He had already received several offers to play college football.
