Berlin Township police are searching for a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a local woman.
The Berlin Township Police Department received a call about an assault on the 100 block of Patton Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. When police officers got to the scene, they found the 39-year-old victim lying in the driveway of her residence and bleeding profusely.
The victim was rushed to nearby Virtua Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save her; she was pronounced dead approximately an hour later. Medical examiners believe that the victim died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
Detectives with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office are actively investigating the killing. At this time, investigators do not have a lot of information to work with. It is believed that the stabbing stemmed from a domestic dispute at the residence.
If a suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, they could be subject to serious criminal charges for aggravated assault or even homicide. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious offense in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a life sentence in NJ State Prison, with a minimum term of incarceration of 30 years.
