A Sicklerville NJ man faces homicide charges after a person he allegedly sold drugs to suffered a fatal heroin overdose.
The South Jersey suspect allegedly sold heroin to a Marlton New Jersey man in November 2015. Sometime later, the drug buyer used the heroin in Evesham NJ and reportedly suffered a heroin overdose. He later died due to the overdose.
Evesham Township police conducted an investigation into the death and determined that the suspect probably sold the drugs to the victim.
Evesham police officers and members of the US Marshals Regional Task Force then joined forces to track down the suspect at his residence in Winslow, New Jersey. He was subsequently placed under arrest.
The 35-year-old suspect is from Sicklerville, an unincorporated community located in Winslow Township, NJ. He has been charged with first degree strict liability for drug-induced death.
Although it is rare for a person to be charged with first degree murder when they were not directly involved in the homicide, or when they did not intentionally commit the murder, it has been known to happen – especially as NJ prosecutors crack down on drug distribution throughout the state.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the first degree felony charges, he would be subject to significant penalties that could include a sentence of 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
While the suspect awaits trial, he is being held at the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly, NJ. His bail amount has been set at $200,000, with no 10-percent cash option.
