Five men from Camden County and a woman from South Carolina have been arrested for trafficking guns by using Amtrak.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. During the investigation, the ATF used a confidential informant to purchase guns from two of the people involved in the conspiracy. The guns were allegedly obtained in South Carolina and were transported to the New Jersey area via Amtrak almost every week by some participants in the crime. After they arrived, two of the defendant’s would broker deals between the buyers and other defendant’s involved. The types of guns sold included handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
The defendant’s in this case are all facing weapons charges including conspiracy to traffic in firearms without a license while two of the alleged participants were additionally charged with felon in possession of a firearm. A conviction for conspiracy to traffic in firearms without a license can subject a person to up to 5 years in prison. Being a felon in possession of a firearm can result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The conspirators could also be hit with a fine of up to $250,000 if found guilty.
