Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a Merchantville bank.
According to authorities, a man walked into the Bank of America branch on the first block of West Maple Avenue last month and committed a brazen robbery. The man allegedly handed a note to a bank teller; the note demanded that the teller give him cash.
Police said that the teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money; the suspect then reportedly fled in a car.
After an investigation that included eyewitness accounts, police identified the 35-year-old suspect as the possible culprit in the robbery.
Somewhat remarkably, the suspect was eventually apprehended in part because of his prior criminal history. Police indicated that the suspect was arrested when he reported to a parole office in Camden, NJ.
After being placed under arrest, the suspect was charged with second degree robbery.
Robbery charges in New Jersey are addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1. As set forth by the statute, the penalties for a second degree robbery offense include a sentence of 5–10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
