Last week, a Mount Laurel teenager was injured after being hit by a car during a drug deal that went bad.
The police claim that the teenager and two adult men allegedly agreed to meet on Hanover Street to complete a drug deal. However, rather than going through with the deal, the men tried to rob the teenager and drive away. The teenager had somehow gotten stuck on the car and was dragged by it on the road. He sustained several injuries including those to his arms, legs, and face. Police tracked down the two suspects the next day and arrested them. They are being held in the Burlington County Jail.
Both of the adult men were charged with aggravated assault and robbery as a result of the incident. Aggravated assault can range from a fourth degree to a first degree crime depending on the circumstances. In this case, the defendant’s are likely to be charged in either the second or third degree. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault can result in a prison term of 5 to 10 years, 85 percent of which must be served before parole eligibility. A third degree conviction can result in 3 to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison. The robbery charge in this case will likely be a second degree charge as well. A conviction for this as well could add more time onto an aggravated assault conviction depending how the defendant’s would be sentenced.
