A man from Camden has pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter. The plea stems from the killing of a Burlington City cab driver that took place last year. Carey Coleman had originally been charged with murder for the killing but pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, a lesser crime with lighter penalties.
Aggravated manslaughter is committed when the actor recklessly causes death under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to human life. Although it is a lesser crime than murder, the consequences are still severe. In Coleman’s case, he could serve 22 years for the crime. Further, aggravated manslaughter is included under the “No Early release Act” meaning that almost 19 years of the sentence would have to be served before he would be eligible for parole.
