Police have arrested two men on attempted murder, drug, and weapons charges.
The charges stem from an incident that took place last week when two officers were on patrol near Browning and Pershing Streets. During the patrol, a woman approached the officers claiming to have just been shot at by a group of males, although she was not hit. The police then investigated the woman’s claim which led them to a home on Browning Street where they saw a man climbing onto a roof. The officers were able to arrest this man and allegedly found five bags of crack cocaine on him. They also proceeded to arrest a second man at another house down the street. The investigation also allegedly resulted in the finding of multiple handguns and a magazine.
Both suspects were subsequently charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and receiving stolen property. Attempted murder can be either a first or second degree charge in New Jersey. If a defendant acted with premeditation, he or she will be charged in the first degree which means a conviction can result in life in State Prison. If a defendant does not act with premeditation, the charges will likely be second degree. A conviction for this crime in the second degree can result in up to 15 years in State Prison. If the defendants in this case are found guilty of the other charges as well, they could serve even longer than this if sentenced to serve the prison terms consecutively.
