A man from Camden, Osvaldo Rivera, had been found guilty of murder, attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, burglary, terroristic threats, felony murder related to aggravated sexual assault, felony murder related to burglary, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of a weapons offense.
The conviction stems from an incident that took place in 2012 where Rivera entered the home of a 12 year old girl and her 6 year old brother while their mother was in the hospital. Rivera raped and cut the girl during the attack and proceeded to stab the boy to death when he came to her defense. The girl managed to get away during the attack and sought help from one of her neighbors. Early reports at the time suggested that Rivera might have been under the influence of various drugs or alcohol but no evidence of this was presented at trial. His escape route, which involved actions such as jumping over fences, suggests that he was not under the influence at the time.
Because of the number and heinous nature of the offenses committed by Rivera, his penalties will be very severe at sentencing. The prosecutor will be asking for a life sentence in prison.
