Camden NJ police officers recently arrested a local man accused of punching another man and causing his death.
According to law enforcement, the 43-year-old suspect struck the 39-year-old victim in the head and caused fatal injuries.
Metro officers with the Camden County Police Department were called to the 2600 block of Federal Street after police received a report of an assault in the area. When police got to the scene, they saw the victim bleeding from his head as he exited the Golden Dragon restaurant.
Emergency responders transported the victim to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Sometime after being dropped off at the hospital, the victim walked out of the facility. Unfortunately, he did not stick around long enough to receive medical treatment for his injuries.
Not long after the victim left the hospital, he was found lying under a bench at a bus stop near the Camden police administration building. When police found the victim, he was unresponsive.
The victim was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a skull fracture, cerebral contusion, subdural hemorrhage, and intraventricular hemorrhage. One month later, the victim died as a result of his injuries.
An autopsy confirmed that the death was a homicide and that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Camden detectives investigated the incident and obtained surveillance video footage that allegedly shows the suspect entering and then exiting the Golden Dragon restaurant. Additionally, detectives spoke with multiple witnesses who said that the suspect punched the victim once in the face.
The suspect was eventually placed under arrest by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with reckless manslaughter.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was taken to the Camden County Jail.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Camden County police continue to investigate the alleged assault. Investigators do not yet know what might have motivated the attack. According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, “The assault is believed to have occurred without warning or provocation.”
